Majella Wright
Specialist Nurse Practitioner
I have worked in many clinical roles for St Barnabas Hospice over the last six years and I have had the privilege of being involved with patients and their families at a significant time of their lives. I know we all make a difference through our interactions with individuals and the values of St Barnabas have enabled me to be present in the moment, show warmth, kindness and compassion but most of all show the human side of me as a person.
I work with a team that demonstrate high levels of clinical skills, education and knowledge and the team are always striving to make the situation the best it can be for people. We are often challenged to find the right words that people need to hear. This may be that their illness is progressing or that they are going to die. People deserve our honesty, openness and a chance to plan the remainder of their lives the way they choose until death. People have a right to be respected and have a dignified death where they want to be.
We meet patients and their families for a short period of time and frequently have intense emotional encounters. At St Barnabas, we do not forget the person behind the patient, their lives and their lived experiences; they all count to make them the person in front of us today. Many of these people will have experienced love and therefore their loved ones will experience grief and that is what makes us all human – our ability to experience emotion.
St Barnabas is a wonderful organisation to work for because are not afraid to show vulnerability, compassion and kindness when it matters most.
