Why join the Lottery?
Helen Sharman’s husband, Chris, sadly died in our Inpatient Unit last month after living with prostate cancer for two years. She had joined the St Barnabas Lottery many years ago, not knowing that they would end up caring for Chris. Incredibly, just three weeks after Chris died, Helen won the rollover jackpot of £7,000!
Helen said, “I was amazed and delighted, but so sad that Chris couldn’t be here to share the news. Chris died aged 79 and I will never forget the kindness, the professionalism, the support and the reassurance that our whole family received from St Barnabas Hospice. They were just incredible.
“As Chris was nearing the end, I stayed overnight at the Hospice. The nurses had made a little bed next to his for me to sleep on and I lay facing him as we both fell asleep. In the night, the nurses came to change his position quietly, and I was so touched when they also moved my bed to the other side of the room, so we could still see each other. They just know exactly the right thing to do and when to do it.”

"The support received from St Barnabas was so valuable enabling me to spend so much quality time with my late wife at home. The support from the nurses was much appreciated and to continue support so that they may continue their wonderful work allows me to show my gratitude."
"My Dad spent the last few days of his life in the Hospice on Nettleham Road and the care he received was amazing, we were all made to feel part of the St Barnabas hospice family. In 2018 we lost our Mum and again we received the wonderful care from the Barnabas nurses."
"My lovely mum has passed away now, and at her funeral she wanted a collection for the Hospice. A fitting end for the years she dedicated to the Hospice. I play the Hospice Lottery and it's my little way of giving a bit of support."
"Both my sister and mum passed away with dignity in the wonderful care of St Barnabas. Nothing was ever too much trouble for the lovely staff ,whatever the time of day, or however busy they were. Truly angels. Words can’t thank them enough."
