Lincolnshire Hospice to host Cream Tea & Plant Sale in Gainsborough
St Barnabas Hospice will be hosting their annual Cream Tea & Plant Sale on Sunday 27th May, from 1.30 – 4pm at their Gainsborough Hospice, George Henderson Lodge, Front Street, Morton, LN2 4QX.
Throughout the afternoon there will be a chance to purchase your summer bedding plants from a wide selection. After making your purchases to get your garden summer ready, you can also enjoy looking around some local craft stalls. To end the afternoon, why not indulge in the beautiful homemade cream tea served in the tranquil garden?
Ella Beale, Corporate Fundraiser for St Barnabas Hospice, said:
“Last year this popular event raised over £1,200 for hospice care in the West Lindsey area, which is enough to fund over ten nurse visits to a patient’s home. This year we are hoping to attract more visitors and raise an even greater amount for our Hospice.
“Our much loved Plant Sale is an excellent opportunity to showcase our wonderful facilities and encourage those in the local communities to learn more about the services we provide, in the welcoming grounds of our Gainsborough Hospice.”
“The plant sale wouldn’t be possible without the generosity of local people and garden centres donating plants to support the event. If you would like to make a donation to help us in organising this event, please email ella.beale@stbarnabashospice.co.uk.”
St Barnabas would appreciate any plant donations for this event, so please get in contact if you would like to help. You can also apply to host a stall on the day, which will cost £20.
For further information or to make a donation please contact Ella Beale on 01522 559 509 or email ella.beale@stbarnabashospice.co.uk. Alternatively, you can visit our website at www.stbarnabashospice.co.uk/gainsborough-plant-sale

Local family joins Inflatable Colour Dash in memory of late father and pub landlord
Six family members have signed up to the St Barnabas Inflatable Colour Dash in memory of late father, John White
A family from Caythorpe has come together to run the St Barnabas Inflatable Colour Dash on Saturday 12th May, in memory of the late John White.
John was a much loved father, grandfather and husband to Emma Framingham, Jason Framingham, Ned Framingham, Sienna Sullivan, Amber Sullivan and Maureen White, who are aged between 11 and 71 and will be taking part in this year’s Inflatable Colour Dash.
Emma, John’s daughter, works for the headline sponsor of the event, Western Power Distribution. There will also be around 20 of Emma’s colleagues taking part in the Inflatable Colour Dash alongside the family. Emma said:
“I was first made aware of the Colour Dash in 2016 through work, as it’s an event we sponsor. St Barnabas is a great cause, so my daughter and I took part in our first Colour Dash that year.
“When the time came around again for the 2017 Colour Dash, we both had no hesitation in signing up again as we had so much fun the year before.
“Never would we have imagined when we did those runs that we would be using the St Barnabas facilities the next year when Dad fell ill.”
John spent time at the St Barnabas Hospice in the Hospital in Grantham for just over two weeks in January 2018, and he sadly died from lung cancer which spread to his bowel on 29th January 2018.
Emma said:
“The care Dad received from St Barnabas was simply phenomenal, and my mum described it as a weight being lifted from her shoulders the moment we walked through the door.
“Everyone from the cleaners and the volunteers to the doctors and nurses were just amazing, from chatting with my dad and making him laugh while he was able to, to making us all feel welcome and reassured with everything that was going on.
“The nurses were so lovely to my eleven-year-old daughter, Sienna, who was worried about going to see her grandad as he was so poorly. They helped her to understand what was going on, and it meant a great deal to her to be able to spend time with him in such a lovely environment.”
John was originally from Brighton, and spent his youth riding his scooter! He joined the RAF aged 18 and was often on Royal Detachment, serving members of the senior royal family. After his time in the RAF, John moved to Caythorpe to run the Red Lion pub, where he settled down to family life.
Emma said:
“Dad made it very clear that he was very proud of us all, and I am sure he’d be bursting with pride that we are doing this for him.
“We raised almost £300 for St Barnabas at Dad’s funeral, and will definitely be doing more fundraising for the Hospice in the future.”
To sign up for the Inflatable Colour Dash, visit www.stbarnabashospice.co.uk/ICD18. Ticket prices are £65 for a family (two adults, two children), £25 for an adult (16+), and £15 for a child (5-15).

Grantham family comes together to fundraise in memory of loved family man
Eight family members of local Grantham man are taking part in the St Barnabas Bubble Rush in his memory
Eight family members of local Grantham man, aged between 2 and 72, are running in this year’s St Barnabas Bubble Rush on Sunday 8th July to raise money in his memory.
Dennis Page was admitted to the Grantham Hospice in the Hospital on 18th April 2017 for pain control, where he was diagnosed with lung cancer. He remained there until 28th April before coming home to be with his family, where the St Barnabas Hospice at Home team looked after him. Dennis sadly died on 29th May 2017.
Natalie Price, Dennis’s granddaughter, said:
“We were inspired to do the Bubble Rush last year because St Barnabas is a special cause to us all. Last year we raised £617 for the Hospice, and this year we’re hoping to raise even more.
“There was also a collection at Grandpop’s funeral which raised an extra £359 for the Hospice.”
This year’s Bubble Rush will once again be held at Stoke Rochford Hall near Grantham, on Sunday 8th July. It is a 5k untimed run which features coloured bubble stations at each kilometre. The bubble cannons pump out 4ft of bubbles!
Rosemary, Dennis’s wife said:
“Dennis was a loving family man and was well liked in the local community. He would strike up a conversation with anybody, no matter where he was!
“The care he received from St Barnabas was simply wonderful and he was treated with such dignity.
“We always said that if there were angels on earth, they were the St Barnabas nurses. A nurse called Theresa always went the extra mile for the family, and nothing was ever too much trouble.”
Before Dennis died, he made a donation himself to St Barnabas, which his wife Rosemary arranged.
Natalie said:
“Grandpops would have been over the moon with our donations, and pleased we were continuing to raise money for St Barnabas Hospice.”
The full list of family taking part in the Bubble Rush in memory of Dennis Page is as follows:
- Mikey Price, age 2
- Roman Price, age 4 (student at St Sebastian’s Primary School)
- Vinnie Price, age 10 (student at St Sebastian’s Primary School)

“Being a Lincolnshire business, we’re familiar with so many people who have been touched by the wonderful work carried out by St Barnabas, and we’re very proud to be a sponsor.”
Donations are crucial to the success of this event. There are no set prices for the tickets – St Barnabas simply asks that you make a donation of what you feel it is worth.
£10 would fund two three-course meals for a patient at our Inpatient Unit, £20 would allow St Barnabas to care for a patient in their own home for an hour, and £34 would fund a physiotherapy session for a St Barnabas patient.
Amelia Mochan, Event Fundraiser at St Barnabas Hospice, said:
“We are excited to announce the launch of our first ever Barnabas Big Screen this summer. It’s a great way for the local community to come together and have fun whilst raising money for charity.
“A lot of our events are quite physical, so we wanted to bring a large scale event to Lincolnshire that was something completely different.”
As well as being able to relax in the sunshine and watch a movie, people will also be able to buy hot and cold food, including classic cinema snacks and drinks. There will also be plenty of ice cream!
The Barnabas Big Screen is open to everyone, but children will be unable to register for tickets unless accompanied by a paying adult. Dogs are allowed, but must be kept on a lead at all times. Thirty friends and family members set to run Hospice Inflatable Colour Dash in memory of local lady
Friends and family members of Lisa Zealand have come together to raise money in her memory by running the St Barnabas Inflatable Colour Dash
On Saturday 12th May, a large group of friends and family members will be joining together at the St Barnabas Inflatable Colour Dash to raise money in memory of Lisa Zealand.
At just age 43, Lisa was diagnosed in September 2017 with terminal liver cancer, and had only six weeks to spend with friends and family before she sadly died on 2nd November 2017.
Linda Stapleton, Lisa’s friend, said:
“I thought it would be a good idea to gather Lisa’s family and friends together to take part in this year’s Inflatable Colour Dash in her memory, as St Barnabas is a charity which Lisa supported personally, as well as in her working role.
“She worked as a Carers Assessor and Support Worker for the City of Lincoln Council, where she recommended St Barnabas Hospice to the carers which she supported.
“Lisa took part in the St Barnabas Colour Dash in 2014, and the collection at her funeral was also donated to the Hospice.”
Included in the friends and family members taking part in memory of Lisa are her husband, Leslie, and her five-year-old daughter, Isla.
Linda said:
“Lisa was a fun loving person and loved spending time with her many friends and family. She would definitely have approved of us all coming together in her memory to raise money for her favourite charity.
“Lisa didn’t use the St Barnabas Hospice services in the six weeks following her diagnosis, but I know she would be so proud that we are following in her footsteps and raising money for such a worthy cause.”
You can sponsor Lisa’s friends and family in the Inflatable Colour Dash by visiting their JustGiving page: www.justgiving.com/fundraising/lisazealand
Laura Stones, Event Fundraiser for St Barnabas Hospice, said:
“It is wonderful that so many people are coming together in memory of Lisa, they should all be really proud of their fundraising efforts.

“We have even expanded the Bubble Rush this year, so participants and spectators can spend time before and after the race wandering round the Bubble Village and Stoke Rochford Hall.”

Lincolnshire sisters reach out to late Grandma’s friends as they run the London Marathon in her memory
Three sisters from Lincolnshire are getting ready to run the London Marathon for St Barnabas in memory of their Grandma
This April, Emma, Rebecca and Katie Seddon will be taking on the challenge of running their first London Marathon to raise money in memory of their Grandma, Eileen Seddon.
Although the three sisters all live and work outside of Lincolnshire, they are coming together in an attempt to raise over £6,000 which will be split between St Barnabas Hospice and Hospice UK.
Rebecca said:
“Our Grandma was really fond of St Barnabas and despite the nature of her stay, loved the Hospice itself and the staff working there.
“They were always so kind and caring to both Gran and the whole family too. They were so great that her health actually improved whilst being in the Hospice.
“Seeing first-hand the care and service they can provide for those who truly need it inspired us to challenge ourselves and raise money for both charities.”
Eileen was diagnosed with Non-Hodgkin Lymphoma and spent several months being cared for by St Barnabas Hospice before she sadly died on 18th November 2017.
Rebecca said:
“Grandma was a total character. She was a very independent, active lady and never wanted to burden anyone, even when we all really wanted to help.
“She was friendly and always had time for people. We couldn’t go for a walk around Lincoln without her stopping countless times to talk to friends she had made whilst living there!
“Grandma lived in a little cottage called ‘The Mouse House,’ which she completely adored. She was a keen gardener and took great pride in looking after it.”
To sponsor the three girls for running the London Marathon, you can visit www.justgiving.com/fundraising/marathonmusketeers3 or text SEDS85 and the amount you wish to donate to 70070.
Rebecca said:
“We are trying to reach out to Grandma’s many friends in Lincoln to let them know what we are doing in her memory, and ask if they will support us. She was a one-off, special kind of lady and we all miss her lots.
“One of our fondest memories of Grandma was when we took her to a pub whilst she was poorly. She loved a pint of Guinness, and she even sent us out to buy her some crisps as the pub had run out of stock!
“When she was alive, we told her that we had charity places to run the London Marathon. She said we must be mad, but was very proud and told every visitor she had.”
St Barnabas Hospice has a whole host of challenge events coming up this year. For more information about taking on a challenge for hospice care, call Mike Pastor on 01522 540 300 or email mike.pastor@stbarnabashospice.co.uk.
Local business hosts fundraiser for St Barnabas Hospice in memory of colleague’s father
Fowler Welch have hosted a Give a Gift event to raise awareness of St Barnabas Hospice and bring in donations for future raffles and tombolas
Spalding company, Fowler Welch, has recently hosted a successful Give a Gift event in support of St Barnabas Hospice, following the death of a colleague’s father.
The Give a Gift event saw colleagues bring in a whole host of items to donate to St Barnabas for future raffles and tombolas. A large number of these items were put to good use during the Burns Night event in Spalding.
Sam Lee, who works as HR Manager at Fowler Welch wanted to give something back to the Hospice that cared for her father.
Sam said:
“I give monthly to St Barnabas Hospice and am a member of their lottery, but it is lovely that my workplace has got involved too.”
Sam’s father, Dermot McGinley, was diagnosed with a brain tumour and spent two months in 2017 being cared for by the St Barnabas Hospice at Home team.
Sam said:
“The care he received can only be described as fantastic. It was personal, honest and responsive, and nothing was too much trouble.
“The nurses treated him as if he was their own father, and he looked forward to his shave every morning.
“I was particularly touched when I overheard a nurse telling Dad to ‘have a safe journey’ as she left the day before he passed away.
Vikki Allen, Community Fundraiser at St Barnabas Hospice, said:
“We are delighted that Fowler Welch has chosen to fundraise for us, and the hard work put into organising the Give a Gift event is admirable.
“The money raised from the tombolas and raffles using these gifts will help us care for more people in Lincolnshire living with a life-limiting or terminal illness, and their families and carers.”
Following the initial Give a Gift campaign, Sam is eager to support St Barnabas with other events throughout the year.
Sam said:
“Dad would be really proud of the fundraising I’m doing for St Barnabas, and it’s such a wonderful way to keep his memory alive.
“He would say ‘good on you – do your bit!’”
If you or your company want to do something to raise money for St Barnabas Hospice, please get in touch with the Fundraising team on 01522 540 300 or email fundraising@stbarnabashospice.co.uk for advice and tips.
Annual quiz night fundraiser set to be Hospice’s biggest yet
The annual St Barnabas Hospice Wine & Wisdom evening is set to raise more money than ever before
Now in its 22nd year, the annual St Barnabas Wine & Wisdom evening started in 1996 by Lincoln widower, John Davey, in memory of his wife, Anne.
In December 1992, Anne was admitted to the Inpatient Unit in Lincoln after being diagnosed with terminal cancer.
John said:
“The Hospice was a truly wonderful place and the people there were incredibly kind. They took such good care of Anne but they also looked after the whole family too.”
“I will always remember the night I fell asleep holding Anne’s hand and I awoke to find that a blanket had been placed over me by one of the kind people there. It’s only a small thing but it is something I will never forget and it really meant a lot.”
“On Christmas Eve, carol singers who were performing in the Hospice. The sound of the music drifted into Anne’s room and the most remarkable thing happened, Anne sat up in bed for the first time in a long time and she sat and sang every carol. For that short time, I had my Anne back. She was just like her old self.
Anne died at the hospice age 56 on 13th January 1993, just eight weeks after being diagnosed.
Following her death, John organised two sponsored walks which raised over £8,000 for St Barnabas Lincolnshire Hospice. In 1996, John decided to organise a quiz night which became known as the annual Wine and Wisdom fundraiser.
John said:
“Wine and Wisdom began as a wonderful way to remember my wife of 29-years and also for our family and friends to remember her too. It also gave us an opportunity to raise money to help other families who need the valuable support of the Hospice.
“I am truly humbled by the amount of money the quiz has raised and it far exceeds any expectations I had. I never expected the quiz to become so popular and I wouldn’t have dared to dream that it would still be going now.
“It’s a lovely lasting tribute to my dearest Anne.”
In 2017, John received an award from St Barnabas for his ‘Outstanding Contribution to Fundraising.’
Ella Beale, Community Fundraiser for St Barnabas, said:
“The time and effort that John has put into fundraising for our Hospice over the years is truly inspirational, and I am delighted to be working on such a wonderful event with a long history in the local community.”
This year’s Wine and Wisdom event will take place on Friday 2nd March from 7pm, at Waddington Village Hall on Mere Road in Lincoln. Teams of 5-8 people can register, and entry costs £6 per person. There are eight rounds, and some great prizes up for grabs.
To register for the event, visit www.stbarnabashospice.co.uk/wine-wisdom-2018 or for more information, contact Ella Beale on 01522 540 300 or ella.beale@stbarnabashospice.co.uk
