Carer at St Barnabas Hospice raises £7,000 from eight day China trek

Tracy Atkins during her trek in China

A hospice Health Care Support Worker has raised £7,000 after her and her sister walked the Great Wall of China.

Tracy Atkins, 51, and her sister Yvonne Ray, 55, both from Lincoln, headed to Beijing for the eight-day charity trek in September.

The pair walked up to eight hours each day in a variation of weather conditions from hot and humid to extended downpours of rain, which made the trek all the more difficult and tiring.

Tracy said: “The Great Wall of China trek was a fantastic life changing experience where we made many friends and had the opportunity to experience the Chinese culture and soak up the wonderful scenery.

“I was honoured to be able to raise the money for St Barnabas Hospice as I see first-hand how crucial our care and services are to the local community.”

The dedicated duo raised the £7,000 from a variety of fundraising events throughout the year including a horse racing night at Lincoln City football club, bingo nights, coffee mornings, afternoon teas and a raffle.

Tracy said: “I would like to express my sincere thanks to the many people, local companies and family and friends who contributed money and gifts to support us.

“I am lucky to have had the support of my colleagues who dug deep to support me in my fundraising endeavours.”

Robert Steadman, Conductor for the Isle of Axholme Orchestra, said:

“Last year I was involved with the University Orchestra who came to take part and had a good time playing carols and helping a great local charity. This year I’m pleased to be bringing along some musicians from a couple of other local orchestras to help out. Music might not be able to change the world, but it can do its best to help.”

The popular Christmas fundraiser will help to fund the exceptionally specialist care the charity offers to more than 9,000 terminally ill patients a year.

St Barnabas Lincolnshire Hospice has so far raised over £30,000 in memory of loved ones after they welcomed more than 1,000 people to their Light Up a Life event in Lincoln.

Becky Otter, Event Manager for St Barnabas Lincolnshire Hospice, said:

“We would like to say a huge heartfelt thank you to everyone who donated to our campaign and dedicated a light in memory of their loved ones. The procession was led by RAF Waddington Pipe Band before being greeted by songs from Vocal Authority, Treble Cliff and the Lincolnshire Cooperative Choir before the Tree of Life lights were switched on. People were then invited to tie messages of love to the railings surrounding the tree before coming together to enjoy mulled wine and soup.
