Hospice Moonlight Walk sees hundreds of people take to the streets of Lincoln in memory of loved ones

Hundreds of inspirational people took to the streets of Lincoln on Saturday night to raise money for St Barnabas Hospice

More than £40,000 was raised when hundreds of people took to the streets of Lincoln dressed in pink, for St Barnabas Hospice’s eleventh annual Moonlight Walk.

Following an energising warm-up led by Curves Lincoln gym, the walkers departed from Bishop Grosseteste University at 10pm for a 10km walk around Lincoln.

Many of the walkers had a personal connection to St Barnabas and were walking in memory of their loved ones.

Rose Gray, Learning and Development Facilitator at St Barnabas Hospice, walked in memory of her Dad, who died three years ago with Parkinson’s, dementia, diabetes, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease and bowel cancer. Rose said:

“Dad would have been very proud of me taking part in the Moonlight Walk. I took part to raise awareness to others about the services that St Barnabas has to offer to both patients and their families.

“When Dad was ill, we were unaware of St Barnabas’s services. If we had known what St Barnabas could have done to ease the journey along, this would have given us all the opportunity to make more informed choices.

“I have raised over £100 for St Barnabas by taking part in the Moonlight Walk, and hope to raise even more money and awareness by taking part in their Snowdon Challenge later this year.”

Hundreds of inspirational people took to the streets of Lincoln

Laura Stones, Event Fundraiser for St Barnabas Lincolnshire Hospice, said:

“We are very proud of everyone who took part in this year’s Moonlight Walk in Lincoln, and are delighted to be hosting a second Moonlight Walk in Stamford on Saturday 15th September.

“The evening was as successful as ever, and it was special to join hundreds of inspirational people walking shoulder-to-shoulder in support of hospice care.

“The money raised will go a long way towards helping our Hospice to provide end-of-life care across Lincolnshire, into the future.”

Tickets are available for the Moonlight Walk Stamford on 15th September, from www.stbarnabashospice.co.uk/moonlightstamford18. Adults are £15 each and children (aged 11+ only) are £10 each.

Local family joins Inflatable Colour Dash in memory of late father and pub landlord

Six family members have signed up to the St Barnabas Inflatable Colour Dash in memory of late father, John White

A family from Caythorpe has come together to run the St Barnabas Inflatable Colour Dash on Saturday 12th May, in memory of the late John White.

John was a much loved father, grandfather and husband to Emma Framingham, Jason Framingham, Ned Framingham, Sienna Sullivan, Amber Sullivan and Maureen White, who are aged between 11 and 71 and will be taking part in this year’s Inflatable Colour Dash.

Family members have signed up to the St Barnabas Inflatable Colour Dash

Emma, John’s daughter, works for the headline sponsor of the event, Western Power Distribution. There will also be around 20 of Emma’s colleagues taking part in the Inflatable Colour Dash alongside the family. Emma said:

“I was first made aware of the Colour Dash in 2016 through work, as it’s an event we sponsor. St Barnabas is a great cause, so my daughter and I took part in our first Colour Dash that year.

“When the time came around again for the 2017 Colour Dash, we both had no hesitation in signing up again as we had so much fun the year before.

“Never would we have imagined when we did those runs that we would be using the St Barnabas facilities the next year when Dad fell ill.”

John spent time at the St Barnabas Hospice in the Hospital in Grantham for just over two weeks in January 2018, and he sadly died from lung cancer which spread to his bowel on 29th January 2018.

Emma said:

“The care Dad received from St Barnabas was simply phenomenal, and my mum described it as a weight being lifted from her shoulders the moment we walked through the door.

“Everyone from the cleaners and the volunteers to the doctors and nurses were just amazing, from chatting with my dad and making him laugh while he was able to, to making us all feel welcome and reassured with everything that was going on.

“The nurses were so lovely to my eleven-year-old daughter, Sienna, who was worried about going to see her grandad as he was so poorly. They helped her to understand what was going on, and it meant a great deal to her to be able to spend time with him in such a lovely environment.”

John was originally from Brighton, and spent his youth riding his scooter! He joined the RAF aged 18 and was often on Royal Detachment, serving members of the senior royal family. After his time in the RAF, John moved to Caythorpe to run the Red Lion pub, where he settled down to family life.

Emma said:

“Dad made it very clear that he was very proud of us all, and I am sure he’d be bursting with pride that we are doing this for him.

“We raised almost £300 for St Barnabas at Dad’s funeral, and will definitely be doing more fundraising for the Hospice in the future.”

To sign up for the Inflatable Colour Dash, visit www.stbarnabashospice.co.uk/ICD18. Ticket prices are £65 for a family (two adults, two children), £25 for an adult (16+), and £15 for a child (5-15).

Grantham family comes together to fundraise in memory of loved family man

Eight family members of local Grantham man are taking part in the St Barnabas Bubble Rush in his memory

Eight family members of local Grantham man, aged between 2 and 72, are running in this year’s St Barnabas Bubble Rush on Sunday 8th July to raise money in his memory.

Dennis Page was admitted to the Grantham Hospice in the Hospital on 18th April 2017 for pain control, where he was diagnosed with lung cancer. He remained there until 28th April before coming home to be with his family, where the St Barnabas Hospice at Home team looked after him. Dennis sadly died on 29th May 2017.

Natalie Price, Dennis’s granddaughter, said:

“We were inspired to do the Bubble Rush last year because St Barnabas is a special cause to us all. Last year we raised £617 for the Hospice, and this year we’re hoping to raise even more.

“There was also a collection at Grandpop’s funeral which raised an extra £359 for the Hospice.”

Taking part in the St Barnabas Bubble Rush in his memory

This year’s Bubble Rush will once again be held at Stoke Rochford Hall near Grantham, on Sunday 8th July. It is a 5k untimed run which features coloured bubble stations at each kilometre. The bubble cannons pump out 4ft of bubbles!

Rosemary, Dennis’s wife said:

“Dennis was a loving family man and was well liked in the local community. He would strike up a conversation with anybody, no matter where he was!

“The care he received from St Barnabas was simply wonderful and he was treated with such dignity.

“We always said that if there were angels on earth, they were the St Barnabas nurses. A nurse called Theresa always went the extra mile for the family, and nothing was ever too much trouble.”

Before Dennis died, he made a donation himself to St Barnabas, which his wife Rosemary arranged.

Natalie said:

Donations are crucial to the success of this event. There are no set prices for the tickets – St Barnabas simply asks that you make a donation of what you feel it is worth.

£10 would fund two three-course meals for a patient at our Inpatient Unit, £20 would allow St Barnabas to care for a patient in their own home for an hour, and £34 would fund a physiotherapy session for a St Barnabas patient.

Amelia Mochan, Event Fundraiser at St Barnabas Hospice, said:

“We are excited to announce the launch of our first ever Barnabas Big Screen this summer. It’s a great way for the local community to come together and have fun whilst raising money for charity.

“A lot of our events are quite physical, so we wanted to bring a large scale event to Lincolnshire that was something completely different.”

As well as being able to relax in the sunshine and watch a movie, people will also be able to buy hot and cold food, including classic cinema snacks and drinks. There will also be plenty of ice cream!

The Barnabas Big Screen is open to everyone, but children will be unable to register for tickets unless accompanied by a paying adult. Dogs are allowed, but must be kept on a lead at all times. If a dog causes disruption or mischief, St Barnabas reserves the right to ask them to leave the venue with their owner.

Thirty friends and family members set to run Hospice Inflatable Colour Dash in memory of local lady

Friends and family members of Lisa Zealand have come together to raise money in her memory by running the St Barnabas Inflatable Colour Dash

On Saturday 12th May, a large group of friends and family members will be joining together at the St Barnabas Inflatable Colour Dash to raise money in memory of Lisa Zealand.

At just age 43, Lisa was diagnosed in September 2017 with terminal liver cancer, and had only six weeks to spend with friends and family before she sadly died on 2nd November 2017.

Linda Stapleton, Lisa’s friend, said:

“I thought it would be a good idea to gather Lisa’s family and friends together to take part in this year’s Inflatable Colour Dash in her memory, as St Barnabas is a charity which Lisa supported personally, as well as in her working role.

“She worked as a Carers Assessor and Support Worker for the City of Lincoln Council, where she recommended St Barnabas Hospice to the carers which she supported.

“Lisa took part in the St Barnabas Colour Dash in 2014, and the collection at her funeral was also donated to the Hospice.”

“There are no age restrictions and the route is child friendly. Whether you’re here to exercise, have fun or remember a loved one, you’re sure to have a great day out.

“We have even expanded the Bubble Rush this year, so participants and spectators can spend time before and after the race wandering round the Bubble Village and Stoke Rochford Hall.”

Spectating is completely free, so please bring along as many friends and family members as possible to support you! There will be children’s activities, food and merchandise stalls, face painting, warm up routines and more in the Bubble Village.
