This month, we’re shining a spotlight on the environmental impact of fast fashion and encouraging everyone to embrace the joy of pre-loved clothes.
Did you know, each year, up to 40% of all clothing manufactured globally is never sold? Second Hand September is a campaign run by Oxfam to encourage everyone to create more sustainable shopping habits for the future.
The fashion industry uses a lot of clean water to produce items, and there’s mass pollution from the production and transportation of clothes. Mountains of clothes end up in landfill every year.
During the 2024-5 financial year, St Barnabas kept 330 tonnes of textiles, shoes, bags, books, and household items out of landfill. Nearly 1.1 million items were sold across our 24 charity shops in Lincolnshire, including 6,000 £1 lucky dip household items and 22,000 items of clothing sold at half price or lower.
You can get involved by:
• Shopping at one of our charity shops across Lincolnshire
• Donating your pre-loved items
• Volunteering your time and skills
St Barnabas has a range of charity shops across Lincolnshire, varying from small high street shops to vast spaces. In each shop you can find thousands of pre-loved, quality items, including clothing, homeware, books, crafts, and toys. Some of the bigger shops also offer furniture and other large items.
Plus, by shopping with St Barnabas, each purchase contributes to free, compassionate palliative and end-of-life care to adults in Lincolnshire.
Caroline Peach, Head of Retail at St Barnabas, says: “Not only will you be able to find incredible bargains to save you money, but you’re actively supporting your local Hospice and preventing landfill waste at the same time.”
