This year St Barnabas Hospice celebrates its 40th anniversary, and with help from local sponsors, will be launching their HeART Trail across Lincolnshire in summer 2023.

St Barnabas are delighted to announce schools and community groups can now get involved by designing and building their own heart sculptures for a special educational element of the trail called Young at HeART.

The Lincolnshire Agricultural Society (LAS) is partnering with St Barnabas on this exciting project. LAS are a charity passionate about promoting and supporting education, food, farming and the countryside within Lincolnshire’s local community. LAS have long been educating children and young people in and outside of the classroom and are now helping St Barnabas deliver this fun project.

Lincoln-based artist Mel Langton is the Artist Ambassador for St Barnabas Hospice and the HeART Trail. She says: “Previous Trails offered readymade sculptures to schools and groups, but this year there’s an exciting opportunity for them to create their very own sculptures.

“It means you can let your imaginations run wild, choosing how it will look, what materials you use, and how you might paint or decorate it. The sculptures will eventually be displayed indoors so you will not need to think about how bad weather could affect it, which gives you more freedom with your ideas.

“For the materials you might want to look at recycling things that get thrown away, there are so many opportunities to reuse items we get rid of.

“It is a really exciting project to get involved in, so if you’re thinking about doing it, you definitely should!”

Mel and other local artists who involved in the trail are known as HeARTists, and each partaking school and community group will be paired up with their own heARTist to help make their ideas become reality.

There is no cost to take part in the HeART Trail, however each organisation that take part will have to source their own materials, and St Barnabas encourages fundraising to support the charity.
