trek to Everest

A Lincoln lady and her daughter are raising money in memory of their dad/grandad this March, with a trek to Everest Base Camp.

This March, Sue Robinson and her daughter, Dani, will be taking on the challenge of trekking to Everest Base Camp to raise money for St Barnabas Hospice, in memory of their dad/grandad.

Sue Robinson (52) and her daughter, Dani Robinson (31) were inspired to take on this challenge last year, when an old military friend asked friends to join him to mark the end of his 38 years in service. Sue was instantly interested in this once in a lifetime trip, and asked her daughter to join in.

Sue said:

“Dani has aspirations to see the world, and it’s a once in a lifetime opportunity to trek to the dizzying altitude of 5,380m.”

Sue and Dani are fundraising for St Barnabas in memory of Bob Shaw, their dad/grandad. He sadly died in August 2015 after living with lung cancer and brain metastases for four months.

Sue said:

“Dad was an inspirational man to many throughout his lifetime. He worked in the Army and the Prison Service, and was a loving husband, dad and grandad.

“We all have such fond memories of him and his humour. He was such a character, and once you met him you would never forget him.

Bob was cared for by the Lincoln Hospice at Home team.

Sue said:

“The care Dad received was second to none. Not only did the team support him, but they were sympathetic and caring to the family during a highly emotional time.

“It was nice for Dad to be able to share his life memories with the nurses. He made them laugh with his stories and it was nice to witness him giggling away with them.

“Dad was a passionate radio amateur and a lifelong member of the Lincoln Short Wave Club. One of the St Barnabas nurses helped him get to his rig one day whilst visiting, so that he could listen and talk to other radio amateurs on the airways. That was his last transmission and he thoroughly enjoyed the afternoon.”

Sue and Dani are hoping to raise as much money as possible for St Barnabas Hospice, and supporters can donate by texting CTSN47 £[amount] to 70070 or by visiting www.justgiving.com/fundraising/robinsoncrew5380.

Sue said:

“Dad would completely laugh that we’re heading to Everest Base Camp, but at the same time he’d definitely be proud of us.

“He’d be so happy that our fundraising efforts are going towards St Barnabas Hospice, as he truly valued the support and often spoke about the kind, caring and special people that work there.

“I hope we can do you justice and raise as much money as possible for you.”

St Barnabas Hospice has a whole host of challenge events coming up this year. For more information about taking on a challenge for hospice care, call Mike Pastor on 01522 540 300 or email [email protected].
