Family & Carers Wellbeing Support

We know that caring for a loved one can be very rewarding, but we understand it can also be demanding of your time and sometimes overwhelming. We work collaboratively with Carers First to offer patients, their family members, and carers, support where and when they need it.

A carer is someone who provides care and support to a family member or friend, who is unable to do tasks such as washing, dressing, taking medication, attending appointments etc. For some, taking on a caring role can be sudden, for others caring responsibilities can grow gradually over time. The amount and type of support that carers provide can vary considerably.

We can provide help with:

  • Carers champions who can listen to worries and signpost to organisations that can help.
  • Referrals to Carers First and help with emergency carers plans if needed.
  • Resources and information for working carers.
  • Relaxation.
  • Emotional support.

Welfare & Benefits Advice

One of the first thoughts when someone is diagnosed with a life-limiting or terminal illness is about finances and the impact this will have on themselves and their family. We aim to alleviate worries about financial wellbeing through the expert support and guidance of our welfare and benefits advisers.

Improve your Physical Wellbeing

People with a life-limiting or terminal illness may find completing activities or basic tasks and maintaining independence more challenging. To help combat this, we have physiotherapists and occupational therapists that can support you to maintain your independence and function in line with individual goals.

We offer various physical services including physiotherapies, occupational therapies, exercise classes and more. These interventions will be discussed with you during the course of your treatment at St Barnabas.

This can include:

  • Improved pain management
  • Reducing anxiety
  • Management of breathlessness
  • Improving sleep
  • Managing fatigue
  • Improvement in deteriorated function as a result of illness or treatment (e.g. surgery, radiotherapy or chemotherapy).

We also offer relaxation therapies including tai chi, which can help with people’s physical symptoms, as well as supporting their mental health.

Getting in touch with St Barnabas was the best thing I did during my diagnosis and treatment journey.

I never thought I’d need a hospice, but I did. And St Barnabas gave me so much more than I expected. That support changed everything for me. The hospice offered so much – tai chi, relaxation classes, wellness, sessions to help with sleep, even singing classes! And it wasn’t just for me, my wife, Maxine, was welcome too. Getting in touch with St Barnabas was the best thing I did during my diagnosis and treatment journey. I don’t think people realise just what the hospice does – not only in those final days but long before that, helping people live well for as long as possible.

What is a wellbeing centre?

The St Barnabas Wellbeing Centres are a base in the community where patients, their families, friends, and carers can attend medical appointments, counselling and bereavement support, and wellbeing services.

These are modern, friendly spaces where local people can find support. The centres host support groups, creative wellbeing groups, informal drop-in coffee mornings, along with other types of social events where everyone is welcome to have a chat and meet new people.

There are multiple Wellbeing Centres around Lincolnshire, each with their own calendar of weekly and monthly events. Support groups are open to the general public – everyone is welcome!
