£2,500 Lottery winner gives money back to Hospice in memory of her husband

Barry

Mrs R joined the St Barnabas Hospice Lottery in June 2012, shortly after her husband, Barry, died age 79. This May, she received a phone call from our Lottery team to let her know that she was the lucky winner of our £2,500 rollover prize!

Mrs R said, “Barry had terminal cancer and wanted to spend the last days of his life at home with his family around him. The St Barnabas Hospice at Home nurses made this possible, and the care they gave encircled the whole family. It was very comforting, and I have supported the Hospice ever since.

“Barry was a very fit man whose career was always in sport. As a family we all enjoy physical activities and Barry and I spent our holidays with rucksacks on our backs walking long distance footpaths. Our favourite walk together was the South West Coast Path which stretched 630 miles from Minehead in Somerset to Poole Harbour in Dorset. We had been walking sections of it over a number of years and by 2011 we had reached Sidmouth in South Devon. Our plan was to walk the last 100 miles in summer 2012, but sadly this was when Barry became ill and he never finished the walk.

“He encouraged me to complete it, so in summer 2013 I gathered my four children, their spouses and nine of my eleven grandchildren and together we completed the walk. We named it ‘A Walk for Barry’ and raised a wonderful £2,395.48 for St Barnabas Hospice thanks to people’s generosity.

“When I heard about my Lottery win, I had no doubt about what I would do with it. I chose to split it five ways between myself and my four children, with my share being donated straight to St Barnabas Hospice. The Hospice gave so much to me and my family and I am pleased that I am able to give something back to them.”

Joining the St Barnabas Hospice Lottery costs as little as £1 per week, and not only does it give supporters the chance to win amazing cash prizes, it is helping the Hospice care for some of the most vulnerable people across Lincolnshire who are living with a life-limiting or terminal illness. Visit www.stbarnabashospice.co.uk/lottery to join today and you could also be a winner like Mrs R.
