Meet Our Team

Tony Maltby

Tony was born in Lincoln and educated at the Royal Wolverhampton School. He is a member of the Institute of Chartered Secretaries and Administrators and after qualifying and having spent some time in Edinburgh to gain experience, he returned to Lincoln and joined the family Wholesale Pharmaceutical business, F Maltby & Sons Ltd. Having worked in all departments he became the Sales and Product manager and director responsible for IT systems.

In 1989 with the passing of his father, he became the Managing Director of the business and he and his brother took the business forward becoming the only Independent Wholesaler in the East Midlands and owning a chain of retail pharmacies. The business was sold to the Lincolnshire Co-operative Society in 2009 and having worked on to assist in the transition, he retired in 2013.

He is Chairman of the Lincoln Civic Trust and a Trustee of the Lindum Sports Association Ltd.

At the 2019 Annual General Meeting, Tony was elected as Trust Chairman.

David Libiszewski

Originally from Staffordshire, David has lived in Lincolnshire since 1987. He qualified and registered as a Pharmacist in 1973 and held senior posts in Hospital Pharmacy in both Cheshire and Lincolnshire until 1998.

David held a number of senior management positions in the NHS until he retired in March 2013 and brings 41 years of NHS experience to the role of Trustee.

He has been Vice Chair of our Board of Trustees since 2019 and is a Trustee of Lincolnshire Action Trust (LAT). David has also been a member of the Lincoln Prison Independent Monitoring Board since December 2012 and its Chairman since January 2015. 

David’s hobbies include cycling, football and reading. He has also been a regular road runner for 30 years and has run a number of marathons including raising money for charity.

Amanda Legate

Stuart Wyle

Stuart has worked as a fundraising senior leader within the charity sector for over 17 years and, since August 2020, has been the Director of Fundraising and Supporters at East Anglian Air Ambulance. Prior to this role, Stuart held positions as the Head of Community Fundraising, Events and Corporate at the same charity and Kidney Research UK, whilst also holding Community Fundraising roles at Marie Curie. Stuart was previously the Chair of the Chartered Institute of Fundraising’s East Anglia Committee.

Stuart was born in Lincolnshire and has lived here all his life, therefore remaining very proud of the county. Stuart has a personal link to St Barnabas Hospice as the Hospice at Home team helped care for his mum, whose final wish was to die at home surrounded by her family and the things that she loved. Stuart and his family will be forever grateful for the care and support she received, and he would like everyone to have the same choice as his mum.

Stuart lives near Sleaford with his husband and two dachshunds and is involved in several amateur dramatic groups, both on and off stage. Stuart is a regular, if reluctant, runner and has run the Lincoln 10K for St Barnabas several times and has taken on his first half marathon for the charity.

Sam Elkington

Sam Elkington has significant experience in negotiating Planning Agreements, complex property sales and acquisitions both in the public and private sector in respect of occupational requirements, developments and investment sales.

Sam was the Senior Partner and one of the founding Partners of Hodgson Elkington LLP which was formed in 1990 and became part of Lambert Smith Hampton in 2016. With over 35 years involvement in the business, he specialises in Property Management, Development and related Professional fields. Since 2020, Sam has traded as an independent consultant through his company Boothby Property Consultancy Ltd.

He provides expert advice on property investment, management and commercial matters, and has an interest in the economic regeneration of rural areas having promoted several schemes throughout Lincolnshire during his career.

Sylvia Knight

Sylvia qualified and registered as a nurse in 1991. Post registration, Sylvia spent her clinical career working with older people in the acute hospital setting. Sylvia developed a number of related research interests in pressure ulcer prevention and nutritional care which led to a number of publications and presentations at national events.

Sylvia then held a number of senior management posts in the NHS including general manager of the Yorkshire Heart Centre and Assistant Director of Operations for adult service (Leeds), before moving to Lincolnshire in 2004 to take up the post of Chief Nurse at the local acute trust.

Latterly, Sylvia has worked as director of nursing (quality governance) in NHS England, taking a lead role in a number of national quality projects including developing and implementing National Quality Board Guidance across England. Sylvia retired from her role at NHS England in 2024. Sylvia therefore brings 33 years of NHS experience to her Trustee role.

Sylvia’s hobbies include playing walking football, swimming and watching rugby league.

James Wadsworth

James has worked in the Higher and Further Education sectors for over 25 years and, since September 2024, has been the Director of HE Academic Registry at DN Colleges Group. Prior to this, James has supported the education of many students as a lecturer, course leader, teacher trainer, educational developer and leading quality teams, whilst also previously undertaking external examiner roles for Leeds Beckett University. James is also Fellow of the Higher Education Academy and completed a PhD in Educational Research and Development, researching creativity as an employability skill.

Sophie Hempsall

Sophie grew up in North Lincolnshire and, after studying and building her career elsewhere, returned to Lincolnshire to raise her family near her parents.

As a registered dietitian and senior leader, Sophie has worked in the NHS for more than 25 years across hospital and community services and now works in Barnsley. She is passionate about improving services, so people receive the very best care and support. Sophie has a particular interest in helping people stay well and live independently for as long as possible through proactive and compassionate care.

Sophie became a Trustee to help ensure that hospice care continues to offer dignity, compassion, and comfort for everyone. She brings extensive leadership experience to support the hospice’s vision and strategic direction.

Outside of work, Sophie volunteers as a Brownie Guide Leader and enjoys spending time outdoors and travelling with her large family and pets, especially her dog.

Dan Ingall

Dan is a true yellow belly, born and bred in Lincoln and has spent his whole life and career in the Construction Industry.  Initially working for a family business, working his way up to becoming Contracts Manager.

Having decided to go it alone in 2005, Dan became a founding member of Daniel Charles Construction, now celebrating 20 years in business. The company has successfully delivered a wide range of Building and Civil Engineering projects throughout Lincolnshire and the East Midlands for both local and national clients.

Dan has been instrumental in developing and maintaining long standing relationships with clients, suppliers and local businesses.  Through Dan’s leadership he has widened the services offered to include quarrying and recycling through continued investment in the business, local economy and many local employees.

Outside of work, Dan enjoys spending quality time with his wife and family, and is passionate about a variety of sports, including mountain biking, snowboarding, and running.  Both Dan and his business actively support and participate in local events, helping to raise funds for local and national charities.  He has been a dedicated supporter of the C2C2C cycling event for many years, as well as a regular participant in the Lincoln 10K.

Beth Curtis

Originally from Worcestershire, Beth has now lived in Lincolnshire for 20 years. She has had a career with a golden thread of education, mostly in externally facing roles. She has worked within Higher Education, Further Education, Social Enterprise and within the commercial sector. Beth is currently Vice-Principal of Riseholme College and Bishop Burton College, a specialist land-based college based in East Yorkshire and Lincolnshire.

Beth is married with two children and enjoys travelling the world: recent trips have included Costa Rica and Vietnam with plans for Panama ongoing. Beth is particularly passionate about the hospice movement as her dad was cared for at home by a hospice team.

Neill Hepburn

Dr Neill Hepburn is a Consultant Dermatologist at United Lincolnshire Teaching Hospital NHS Trust.  

Neill came to Lincoln in 1997 after spending the first part of his career in the Army which included service in the First Gulf War and a United Nations Tour in Angola.  He trained in Dermatology in Edinburgh.

Neill feels fortunate to have seen the dermatology service develop to provide complex care for patients with skin disease and skin cancers across Lincolnshire.  In addition, he undertook a number of medical managerial roles, including that of Medical Director, in which he was able to work with colleagues in many specialities, and organisations, to improve the health services in Lincolnshire.

Outside work Neill is Lay Reader in the Church of England, he enjoys driving his Morgan sports car and holidays in Scotland.

Neill chairs the Patient Care Committee.

Steve Punton

Steve was born abroad while his father was serving in the Royal Air Force but was educated mostly in Scotland. In 1975 he joined the Royal Air Force and served as an Airborne Radar technician, technical instructor and Flight Trials engineer until his retirement in 2001 having served mostly in Lincolnshire albeit with frequent periods of time spent further afield. He subsequently joined an Aerospace company working as a Project Engineer helping to bring new aircraft and equipment into service before eventually retiring in 2021. 

Steve has a particular interest in organising and participating in fundraising activities. Previously, he formed a charity to raise much needed funds for his local school and more recently has organised events to raise money for St Barnabas Hospice.

In his spare time, he enjoys creative writing (flash fiction) watching rugby and playing golf.
