A local family have signed up to the St Barnabas Moonlight Walk, which takes place on the anniversary weekend of their dad’s death

Women from across Lincoln have been signing up in their hundreds for St Barnabas Hospice’s Moonlight Walk, which is set to take place on Saturday 10th June at Yarborough Leisure Centre.

One family explain why they are walking in memory of their dad, Graham Taylor, to raise funds for the charity that cared for him in his final days.

Judy Kent, 54, from Bicester, said:

“Our dad died at St Barnabas Hospice on 10th June 2011 after being diagnosed with oesophageal cancer the previous year. We were all there by dad’s side for a week and the wonderful nurses supported us every day.

“It was Dad’s wish to die in St Barnabas with his girls around him and because of St Barnabas his final wish was fulfilled. I still remember now how the nurses lit a candle when he died, such a simple thing to do but something that was very poignant and calming.”

After Graham died, his family vowed that they would always spend the anniversary of his death together and that they would celebrate the kind and generous man they had lost.

His daughter, Nicola Thomas, 46, from Ruskington, said:

“When we saw the Moonlight Walk was taking place on the anniversary of dad’s death we knew that we had to sign up. This is the perfect opportunity for us to honour Dad and to be able to give something back to such an important charity, to ensure they can be there for more families in the future.”

The Moonlight Walk is a flagship event for St Barnabas, and features a 10K route around Lincoln. Participants will warm-up at Yarborough Leisure Centre before heading out to the streets of Lincoln and past the Cathedral.

Judy said: “The care Dad received at St Barnabas was simply wonderful and he was always treated with dignity and respect. The nurses do such an incredible job and look after the whole family.

“I speak from the heart when I say that St Barnabas Hospice is a wonderful place and everyone who works there is a true credit to the charity.”

Registration for the Moonlight Walk, which starts at Yarborough Leisure Centre, Riseholme Road, Lincoln, is £12 for adults and £7 for children (11 – 15).

Adult participants are asked to raise minimum sponsorship of £20.17 and children are asked to raise as much as they can.

Participants can register online.
