We are collecting Christmas trees this January, in aid of Hospice care

Each January, St Barnabas and our wonderful supporters go across the county to collect your Christmas trees and recycle them! All we ask in return is that you make a suggested donation of £19.93 to help us care for our patients living with life-limiting or terminal illness across Lincolnshire.

Our friendly team of volunteers will take care of your tree in the most environmentally responsible way, meaning you don’t need to make a trip to the tip or spend time vacuuming needles out of your car.

This year, we are collecting trees from many towns and villages across Lincolnshire between the 6th January and 10th January 2024.

How does it work?

Your tree will be collected by our wonderful volunteers, during the first full weekend of January 2024. All we ask is that you leave your tree in a visible location outside of your property.

Our volunteers are unable, under any circumstance, to enter your property (e.g. house, back garden, shed etc). If we cannot see your tree, we will leave a calling card to let you know we visited. Please note that we are only able to collect trees under 6ft. If you are wishing for more than one tree to be collected, please ensure your donation reflects this.

How will your tree be recycled?

We have partnered with several wood chipping companies who have kindly agreed to chip those trees which are unpotted. Wood chippings can be used for biomass boilers, bedding for farmyard animals, for use in agricultural fertilisers, or they can be turned into mulch for gardens.

If you would like us to collect a potted tree, this will be replanted by Lincolnshire Showground within their woodland.

Helen Lofts' story

Helen Lofts was an outgoing, cheerful, courageous and kind young woman who sadly died, age 31, on 2nd January 2019 after being diagnosed with non-Hodgkin lymphoma in March 2018.

Jane, Helen’s mum said, “Helen was visited weekly by the St Barnabas Hospice at Home nurses, who were just so lovely. A physio also came out to see her and was able to sort her out with equipment. There was one point where Helen was just so desperate for a bath and the physio arranged for her to get to the St Barnabas Inpatient Unit and have a nice bath there. I can remember how happy this made Helen, and I’m so grateful that St Barnabas was able to help her in this way.”

Helen and her husband, Chris, got married in May 2018, but had to put their honeymoon on hold whilst she was undergoing chemotherapy. Once they learned the cancer was incurable, a friend decided to start a Crowdfunder to raise enough money to send their family to Disneyland one last time. This raised an incredible £6,020.

Jane said, “The St Barnabas nurses gave Helen the confidence in her ability to be able to go to Disneyland when she was so poorly. Helen refused to let her cancer stop her living life to the full and she had the most amazing time on her last holiday.

“It’s every parent’s worst nightmare to lose a child, but I’m holding on to such special memories of Helen. She was always the life and soul of the party and so much fun to be around.”

What your donation means to the Hospice

would allow us to care for and support a terminally ill patient in their own home for one hour.

would enable us to purchase a comfort bag for a child or young person, providing some fun things to do and help to support them during a difficult time.

would pay for our bereavement helpline to run for a day so we can give urgent support to those struggling with their grief.
