This course is designed for clinicians who care for patients towards the end of their lives. It will help you to look from the patient’s perspective and to assess what is most important to them.

There is a limited number of symptoms that cause significant problems for patients, whatever the underlying condition causing their deterioration. We will consider each of these main symptoms with a 3-step approach, correcting any correctable causes, considering non-drug measures and looking at drug treatments.

Learning Outcomes

• Understand the patient’s perspective.
• Recognition that the end of life is approaching.
• Working with the five priorities for care.
• Symptom control: breathlessness, nausea and vomiting, agitation, secretions.
