A new home for Hospice Care in South Lincolnshire

I’m Sheena Ambler and I am the Senior Clinical Services Manager for St Barnabas Hospice. For the last ten years I have been very proud to lead a team of brilliant specialist palliative care nurses and volunteers in South Lincolnshire.

Before the pandemic, our home was an aging bungalow in Boston. It was much loved – but over the years became increasingly ‘run down’ and didn’t offer the environment we needed for staff or patients. So, it was amazing to learn in 2019 that a local philanthropist, Stefan Novak, had left a large legacy gift to St Barnabas. His gift made it possible for us to design a new base offering the flexible space our patients need.

But we are not there yet – and we need your help. Stefan’s legacy paid for just under half the cost of the new Wellbeing Hub. We’ve raised another quarter from fundraising over the last year but, as I’m sure you appreciate, the pandemic has seriously affected our ability to bring in all the money we need.

Any gift you could manage today will help to bring in the total we need to complete the build. Thank you, from the whole team for your support.

Help us fund our vision

Novak House will give the people of South Lincolnshire a safe and welcoming space where they can receive the best support and care from specialists. We must raise around £234,250 to complete this vital project, which will include the following rooms…

Treatment and therapy rooms

These dedicated rooms will allow us to provide a range of treatments and therapies in a private, well-equipped space.

Garden room

This multi-functional space will overlook a beautiful garden and can be used for a range of activities including therapy groups, exercise sessions, counselling, social events and more.

Rosie’s: our new lounge and kitchen

Rosie’s will be the vibrant heart of our new building, named in memory of our cherished colleague, Rosie Wood who sadly died from coronavirus. Her memory will live on in our lounge and kitchen, making it a social space for staff, volunteers, patients and family members.

Stefan’s Story

In 2019 a local philanthropist, Stefan Novak, left a large legacy gift to St Barnabas Hospice. With his gift was the request that the money went towards creating a new centre for hospice care in South Lincolnshire, which made our dream of a Boston Wellbeing Hub a reality.

Born and raised in Lincolnshire, Stefan lost his eyesight at a young age but went on to have a successful career in banking. He met his wife, Lynn, and they immediately became inseparable. In the early 2000s, Lynn was diagnosed with cancer and Stefan remained by her side until her final moments, spent in a hospice local to their home.

The exceptional hospice care Lynn received had really moved Stefan, which was what prompted such a generous legacy gift to St Barnabas – the Hospice local to his place of birth and death. Stefan wanted as many others as possible to know the same compassionate care that Lynn had received from the hospice movement.

Stefan’s legacy will cover just under half of the costs needed to build this incredible new centre; a centre which we hope will be a fitting tribute to such a wonderful man.

In memory of Rosie Wood

Rosie died of COVID-19 in the autumn of 2020. We lost a cherished and valued colleague and friend. But South Lincolnshire lost a dedicated public servant, someone who had nursed thousands of local people over her 30+ year career. Our new lounge, “Rosie’s”, will be named in her honour – and we will ensure it is the bright, friendly, happy place we know she would have loved.
